5 Must-know Wedding Beauty Tips

Beautiful Bridal Skin

There’s nothing more beautiful than the natural glow of happiness that every bride exudes on her wedding day. To help that glow along, schedule a series of monthly facials as early as six months prior to your wedding. To ensure that your skin looks picture perfect; your last facial should be no later than two weeks before the big day. This gives any redness and spotting enough time to calm down.

The dreaded wedding day pimple

If you are already dealing with acne you want to avoid using new products a month prior to your wedding. This means no switching to a new skin care range, any new shampoos or makeup.

To zap those occasional pimples caused by stress apply cotton pads soaked in milk or chamomile tea followed by lukewarm water to calm down any inflammation.

Wax on – Wax off

Having your eyebrows done can cause swelling, a little discomfort and sometimes a little bleeding. You don’t want to have to deal with this a day before your wedding. Ideally, have your eyebrows done a week before your big day.

Pearly Whites

When considering bleaching your teeth for that picture-perfect wedding day smile, always consult your dentist before choosing an over-the-counter product since some may irritate gums, lips and may cause swelling. Start your teeth whitening regime a week before your wedding.

Natural solutions for teeth whitening, consider rubbing teeth with strawberries or lemons and rinse with cool water.

Avoid drinking coffee, dark sodas and red wine in the week leading up to your big day to reduce teeth stains.

Bronze goddess

The rule here is simple when considering a self-tanner or sunbed tanning; underdo not overdo! You don’t want to risk looking beet red or as orange as a pumpkin. Gradually build up your tan to your desired tone a month or two before the big day.

The safest way to add some colour is with a cream or powder bronzer seeing that you can try out the look well in advance.

Happy grooming!

Pure-Aesthetics: Non-invasive treatments for healthy skin

I met up with Ingrid Katz, a skin care therapist at Pure Aesthetics, to explain the hype around non-invasive skin peels.

Situated at the Linksfield Netcare Hospital, Pure Aesthetics offer clients a comprehensive solution to skin health.

In conjunction with Dr Doucas, a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, they offer a variety of non-invasive, results driven treatments for a variety of skin concerns.

With the emphasis on clinical skincare, they are dedicated to helping their clients reveal healthy, youthful and glowing skin.

Ingrid advises that every person’s skin is different; therefore she recommends that you meet with her for an in-depth consultation to map out your customised skin care needs.

Pure Aesthetics stocks 3 major brand of skincare;  Dermaceutic, QMS Medicosmetics and Optiphi. With Opitiphi being a very popular choice, Ingrid Katz will explain to us why this range is a necessity:

Why consider a light chemical peel?

“The skin is constantly under attack by exposure to harmful internal and external factors. The most detrimental of these include solar UV radiation, harsh climatic conditions, free radicals and stress.  They affect the condition of our skin and give way to the visible signs of aging. The correct environment, PH 5.5, allows for optimal cellular functioning, resulting in physiologically younger looking skin”, Ingrid explains.

Who should consider this treatment?

”This treatment is suitable for skins with pigmentation, uneven skin tone, redness, enlarged pores, acne, dehydration, sun damage and general signs of ageing”, says Ingrid.

How does this treatment work?

The scientific formulation of actives is aimed at directly reversing the effects of time and the environment. The positive influence on the cellular processes allows the cell to regain its natural balance and optimal functioning – the result is regeneration on a cellular level, reversing the signs of ageing.

The Optiphi skin rejuvenation peel is a treatment that is focused on regeneration of the skin at early stages of cell life. This is done through the use of glycolic acid in its purest form; benefits include:

  • Stimulates the cellular activity
  • Improves elasticity and firmness of the skin
  • Increases the production of dermal matrix compounds
  • Increases collagen synthesis
  • Promotes cellular turnover and differentiation
  • Improvement in skin hydration levels
  • Refining of enlarged pores
  • Improvement in overall skin texture
  • Reduction in hyper-pigmentation as well as uneven pigmentation
  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles

Recommended retail price: R 650 – 00
Duration of treatment: 20-30 minutes

Recommended that a 6 week course be done initially; after which the therapist/doctor would reassess the skin and the progress and either prolonging the weekly treatments or placing the client onto a monthly maintenance programme.

This non-invasive, gentle way of removing the damaged outer layers of the skin is a perfect treatment to keep your skin looking and feeling good, especially in the colder months when you’re not as exposed to harsh sunlight. Chemical peels can be used on any area of the body, the most common areas being the face, hands and chest.

Velashape III: Slip back into your skinny jeans again

We as women are our own worst critic when it comes to our body shape. Research has shown that 91% of women say that there are things about their body they want to change or reduce. We all have tried diet and exercise, but we still feel it is not enough.

I was invited to Dr. Mark Steinman’s office, situated in Rosebank, to try out the latest non-invasive fat burning and body contouring device VelaShape III.

I met up with the lovely Sister Tammy Sinek and she walked me through the process and explained the science and technology behind this revolutionary device.

What makes this device revolutionary?

“This machine combines infrared, radiofrequency and vacuum to precisely heat the tissue up to 3mm and 15mm depth respectively.  The combination of these technologies causes deep heating of the fat cells, their surrounding connective tissue and underlying dermal collagen fibres; the fat matrix and cells contract and centimetres are lost. The added vacuum allows for deeper and faster heat penetration. In turn, this promotes an increase in circulation, lymphatic drainage, cellular metabolism and collagen depositing”, says Sister Tammy.

What part of the body can be treated?

“The Vela treatment can be applied to any body area that may need contouring; thighs, abdomen, arms, flanks and cellulite”, Sister Tammy explained.

Who would be an ideal candidate for VelaShape treatment?

“The Vela treatment is recommended for normal to overweight patients who suffer from unsightly fat and cellulite deposits in the pelvic region, around the hips, abdomen, or lower limbs. For optimized results, these patients should also be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle”, says Sister Tammy.

What are the contraindications to a body contouring treatment with VelaShape?

“There are no major contraindications for the Vela treatment. For patients with pacemakers/defibrillator, pregnant or nursing or severe health problems, it is recommended to defer to their physician prior to commencing treatment”, Sister Tammy explains.

How many treatments are required in order to see a noticeable effect on the body?

“An improvement in the appearance of the skin can be observed after the first treatment. The machine’s predecessor to three treatments to achieve what this machine does in one! For optimal results, it is recommended to complete the recommended treatment protocol of 3 treatments”, Sister Tammy explains.

What results can you expect from this treatment?

“A localised reduction in skin laxity and fat volume and an overall improvement in skin structure and texture”, says Sister Tammy.

The treatment is done in a professional manner; a health questionnaire needs to be filled out prior to the treatment to see if you qualify.  The area you want to focus on is marked with a pen followed by some before photos to track your results.

The treatment itself is non-invasive; you can expect to feel heat on the surface of your skin, which is regulated with communication to Sister Tammy if you want to up the heat.  With the colder months coming our way, this would be a great way to keep warm and lose weight as the same time.

Remember when your brother or sister used to pinch you as a child, this is the same feeling you can expect on the treated area; called stacking, this tightens the skin surface. Other than that you just lay back and have a good chat while your fat burns away.

After the treatment you can expect to feel a light tingling sensation on the area that has been treated. You’re not allowed to take a steaming hot shower or apply any creams on the treated area for the next 12 hours.

Over the course of a week, I could see my tummy flattening and my skin tightening.  The proof is definitely in the ‘pudding’.

Galderma SA: Live your life in colour

Restylane (Custom)

I was invited by Cindy Hancock (National Commercial Manager) from Galderma SA to attend a lovely breakfast at the Fire & Ice Hotel at Melrose Arch on March 8.

When I got there I was welcomed with huge smiles and warm hugs by the ladies from Galderma SA that hosted this event. They were; Cindy Hancock (National Commercial Manager), Ilze Groenewald (Account Manager) and Turid Stacey (Business Unit Manager).

One thing I immediately recognized was that they all had this glowing, flawless, perfect skin; this means only one thing that the proof really is in the pudding. They all use the Restylane Skincare Range from Galderma SA.

What is this ‘Perfect Skincare Range’ from Restylane that I am talking about you might ask; Cindy tells us more, here’s what she had to say:

Restylane is a range of hyaluronic acid-based products consisting of three product groups: Restylane fillers, Restylane skinboosters and Restylane skincare. Restylane fillers are injectable gels used for filling out wrinkles and lines or increasing fullness in lips or face. Restylane skinboosters are also injectables and are used to rejuvenate and improve the quality of the skin. Restylane skincare is a series of skincare products that protects, hydrates and nourishes the skin”, says Cindy.

Here’s what she had to say when I asked her more about Galderma SA:

Galderma SA is a pharmaceutical company specializing in the research and development of dermatological treatments. Galderma is a fully-owned company of Nestlé. We are committed to the future of dermatology”, Cindy explained.

Nothing ends off a morning breakfast quite so nicely than a cup of coffee and a gift bag filled with Restylane goodies to indulge in.

Thank you to the ladies from Galderma SA for sharing some of your insightful knowledge of these products with me.
